Health benefits of dark chocolate

It seems like this time of the year every shelf is packed with different presentations of chocolate.

Chocolate is one of the most recognized contributions of the Aztec civilization. Considered a gift of Quetzalcoatlin in the beginnings (in the shape of a seed), has been attributed with almost magical powers and a favorite among people around the world.

Dark chocolate offers some great health benefits. The key with chocolate, just like with many other options, is moderation.

Dark chocolate is a reliable source of antioxidants, responsible for decreasing the risks of some cancers and heart diseases. One of the antioxidants found in dark cholate is flavanol. Flavanol helps in reducing the blood pressure and consequently the health risks associated with it.

By increasing the levels of High-Density Lipoproteins (good cholesterol) and decreasing the levels and oxidation of Low-Density Lipoproteins (bad cholesterol), it can also reduce the health risks associated with high cholesterol.

Another benefit flavanol brings to the table is the ability to increase blood flow and hydration to the skin. The increase in blood flow also benefits brain functions, especially in elderly people.

The “seed from the Gods” can bring many benefits for our health when consumed in moderation. It’s crucial to understand that the chocolate bars we have easy access to are not all the same, even when they may have the same basal ingredient. In order to commercialize the different chocolate bars, they have added whole milk, sugars, and other ingredients that are not necessarily going to bring the health benefits we are looking for.

Let moderation be your guideline and learn what chocolate bar would be the best and more beneficial for you.
